I am very happy to be asked to join this great group of people. The singular goal is to raise money to help residents of the Capital District who are living with Kidney Disease. We don't hear as much about Kidney Disease as we do about Heart Disease or Cancer but it is the 9th leading cause of death in the United States. Every year, Kidney Disease kills more people than breast or prostate cancer. Here are some other facts about Kidney Disease
1 in 3 American adults is at risk for chronic kidney disease. This number increases to 1 in 2 over the course of a lifetime.
26 million Americans have chronic kidney disease (CKD) and millions of others are at increased risk.
Diabetes and high blood pressure are the two leading causes of chronic kidney disease.
African Americans are 3 times more likely to develop CKD than Caucasians. Hispanics, Pacific Islanders, Native Americans and Seniors are at increased risk.
Early detection can help prevent the progression from kidney disease to kidney failure..
Heart disease is the major cause of death for all people with CKD.
Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the best estimate of kidney function.
Hypertension causes CKD and CKD causes hypertension.
Persistent proteinuria (protein in the urine) means CKD is present.
Kidney disease is silent – it can develop for years with no noticeable symptoms.
High risk groups include those with diabetes, hypertension and family history of kidney disease.
Please consider donating to this cause and/or attending the fashion show if for no other reason than to see if I can walk the Catwalk without falling down!!!
